The Ultra-Orthodox Ultimatum and October 20 Election Deal

​Shas chairman Aryeh Deri and United Torah Judaism leader Moshe Gafni have issued an ultimatum to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Backed by Israel's leading rabbis, the ultra-Orthodox leaders demanded the immediate legislative advancement of the Basic Law: Torah Study and bills preventing the arrest of yeshiva students. The factions threatened to vote to dissolve the Knesset as early as next week if committee action is not taken. In a closed door meeting, a compromise was brokered: Netanyahu has committed to fast-tracking the legislation in exchange for locking in a election date for October 20, 2026.

The Likud primaries are now officially locked in for August 4, 2026. The reversal has immediately exposed severe pressure within the party.
